Kumiko with Des King
2 Day Course - no experience required!
Kumiko is the traditional Japanese craft of cutting and fitting timber pieces together to create beautiful, intricate lattice work. In the past, panels were used in shoji screens and doors, each design having its own meaning. In a contemporary setting kumiko panels can be seen in boxes, enhancing cabinets or simply framed as a stand-alone piece, admired for it’s own beauty.
Now, Sydneysider’s can learn the secrets to crafting Kumiko panels from Australia’s foremost expert, Des King. We’re bringing Des down from sunny Queensland so that he can share his knowledge with those of us south of the border.
Des is the author of 4 books on the subject of Kumiko so this is a rare opportunity to join a small group workshop and immerse yourself in all things kumiko.
This two-day workshop is suitable for all levels, from beginners to those fascinated with learning this wonderful art.
Participants will undertake one “kumiko” piece consisting of two square ‘as-no-ha’ patterns enclosed by twin ‘kumiko’ and a ‘tsukeko’ frame. And of course, Des will explain everything you’ll need to know about marking out and cutting gap free joints, because in traditional kumiko, the parts are tensioned together not glued.
