Cigar Box Guitar

Make a Cigar Box Guitar with Geoff Tonkin

2 Day Course - suitable for all levels, anyone can do it!

Nothing beats the satisfaction of making and playing your own musical instrument. Over 2 days your customised cigar box guitar, ukulele or banjo will come to life. It doesn’t have to be made from a cigar box either – old wine boxes, biscuit tins, hub caps or even an olive oil tin, can all contribute to the uniqueness of your instrument.

Over 2 days your instrument (fitted with a peizo, volume control and input jack) will come to life, and once the final tuning is complete we will sit down together and enjoying making whatever music the day brings. No matter your level of woodworking, or musical talent, this is a fun and funky course for the musical at heart.

Course Outcomes: This course focuses on hand tools and hand skills ie. marking out, cutting, shaping, fitting the neck to the body and elementary electronics.

Days: Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July, 2016

Time: 9.00am - 4.00pm daily

Places: Limited to 6 participants

Course fee: $588.00 (incl GST)
- includes all materials, electronic components and consumables
- we will have a selection of guitar bodies but participants are welcome to seek out their own for a truly customised result

About Geoff

Geoff Tonkin’s musical career began 40 years ago with the gift of a guitar and his fascination in learning to play all sorts of instruments has never ceased. In 1981 he was a founding member of the popular NSW Central West bush band, November Shorn, which after 34 years still delights audiences from Bathurst to Bourke. In the group, Geoff plays button accordions, harmonica, tin whistle, didgeridoo, bodhrán and lagerphone as well as singing and calling the dances. Geoff completed the fulltime graduate course at the Sturt School for Wood, and continues to explore the fascinating world of wood and instrument making. This includes harp making at Harps and Harps in Gosford and guitar making with Gilet Guitars in Sydney. These days Geoff works as a freelance furniture maker / instrument maker / teacher and musician near Molong in Central Western NSW.
