Woodworking for the Creative at Heart
News Update
For 10 years we operated Heartwood Creative Woodworking, a recreational woodworking school for adults in Sydney’s creative hub of Marrickville. We also added a dedicated Makers Space workshop for ourselves and our team during the last two years of operations.
Having achieved everything we hoped we would, we decided it was time for a change of pace and newer opportunities; that resulted in a move to the Southern Highlands in 2022 where we set up a co-share workshop in Old Dairy Close, Moss Vale.
We developed new courses, created works for exhibition and luxury timber items for sale in galleries. We undertook furniture commissions and other projects that first appeared to be outside the normal scope of “what we do”, but projects that proved immensely enjoyable and rewarding. Therefore, turning our hands and minds to new projects and opportunities as they presented themselves.
Looking for more creative and financial freedom, we bought our own workshop in Owen Street Mittagong in early 2024. We’ve been welcomed by a wonderful community of people, small and local businesses and the workshop is a 5 minute drive from home.
Continuing to forge a strong relationship with friends at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, NZ Stuart taught a number of short courses in May including the “Mark of a Well Made Drawer” the inaugural 10 day “Intro to Chair Making Course” and the ever popular “Steam Bent Shaker Boxes” course where he was joined by Carol. If you would like a glimpse into the chair making course have a look at the videos “The Best Little Woodworking School in the Southern Hemisphere” and “How to tell a Builder from a Woodworker?” compiled by Scott Brown of Scott Brown Carpentry on Scott’s UTube channel.
Stuart will return to Nelson in October where he will be supporting Lloyd Anderson’s short course as part of the school’s mentorship program funded by Creative New Zealand. Following that, Stuart will lead a new course “Jigs and Bench Aids” and again offer “Intro to Chair Making” and Steam Bent Shaker Boxes.
On the local front, Stuart is teaching Curved and Shaped Components on the Certificate IV Furniture Course at the Sturt School for Wood and developing new courses for delivery at the Woodworkers Assn NSW later in the year.
In the meantime, we continue to fit out our much loved new workshop at Owen Street and plan for future activities.
If you would like to follow our adventures, we are on instagram and facebook. If you would like us to bring our courses to you, or if you would like to discuss how we can bring your next furniture piece to life, then please get in touch.
