Woodworking for the Creative at Heart

News Update

For 10 years we operated Heartwood Creative Woodworking, a recreational woodworking school for adults in Sydney’s creative hub of Marrickville. We also added a dedicated Makers Space workshop for ourselves and our team during the last two years of operations.

Having achieved everything we hoped we would, we decided it was time for a change of pace and newer opportunities; that resulted in a move to the Southern Highlands in 2022 where we set up our current workshop in Old Dairy Close, Moss Vale.

We developed new courses, created works for exhibition and luxury timber items for sale in galleries. We undertook furniture commissions and other projects that first appeared to be outside the normal scope of “what we do”, but projects that proved immensely enjoyable and rewarding. Therefore, turning our hands and minds to new projects and opportunities as they presented themselves.

Spending more time at the Centre for Fine Woodworking in Nelson, NZ where Stuart taught Chair Design and Construction on the fulltime Furniture Makers Program along with a short course titled “the Mark of a Well Made Drawer” was a definite highlight of 2023.

Closer to home there were teaching engagements at the Sturt School for Wood on the Certificate IV course where Stuart enjoyed teaching “Drawing, Rendering and Model Making” and “Curved and Shaped Components for Furniture”. At the Illawarra Woodwork School Stuart met novice woodworkers and those wishing to hone fundamental skills in the “Hand Tools Introduction Course”, and perennial favourites the Woodworkers Association NSW was the venue for Spoon Carving, Steam Bent Boxes, and a new Bedside Table course using Dominoe joinery or in woodworking parlance “loose tongue joinery”.

We also had the pleasure of being part of a professional development strategy being explored by the Design and Technology Department of Newington College; one of Sydney’s prestigious educational institutions. Using our signature Small Round Table short course as the vehicle for training, we spent a day in the machine room working with teachers and a contact day with young, enthusiastic students embarking on their Year 12 major projects.

In 2024 we will continue to partner with these institutions and share our skills, knowledge and passion through craft-based education.
