Instructors
Your instructors are husband and wife team, Stuart and Carol Faulkner, owners of Heartwood Creative Woodworking. Stuart and Carol started carving spoons as a way to relax in the workshop. However, this slight obsession with carving spoons soon found its way home as well!

Stuart has been making furniture and educating makers since graduating from the Sturt School for Wood over 20 years ago. He is an Accredited Member of Studio Woodworkers Australia and member of the Woodworkers Association of NSW. He is principal instructor at Heartwood Creative Woodworking and continues to create work for exhibition. He exhibited the “Ele” coffee table in the “Edge 2020” exhibition and mentored two of the Heartwood team - all were featured in Issue 107 of the Australian Wood Reveiw magazine.

In March 2022 Stuart and Heartwood team members exhibited new work at the Australian Design Centre in “The Art of Making”, an exhibition by members of Studio Woodworkers Australia.

Carol’s journey into spoon carving began in earnest when prominent carver Hape Kiddle, gave her a spoon blank a number of years ago and simply said “here, carve this”. That particular spoon remains a favourite in Carol’s collection and she continues to be inspired by the forms Hape creates and his enthusiasm for passing on his knowledge.

Not only was spoon carving a good way for a “non-woodworker” to be involved with the workshop, Carol saw carving spoons as a great way to use the many beautiful timber offcuts being created by the furniture making students. She has since gone on to carve many spoons and therefore used up many offcuts in the process. She has also become a self-proclaimed “tool tester” in the process!
