Intro to Steam Bending - Steam Bent “Shaker” Boxes

1 Day Course - suitable for all levels
Steam Bent boxes, also referred to as “Bentwood Boxes” and “Shaker Boxes” have become iconic symbols of American Shaker culture. Made entirely by hand in the 1800’s, boxes were used to store a variety of items including dried foodstuffs and haberdashery. They also became a source of income as those outside of Shaker communities highly valued the boxes for their craftmanship as well as their utility. Living a simple, spiritual life, Shakers shunned ostentatious ornamentation, but they incorporated beautiful, functional details, into everyday objects and furniture. This can be seen in the “gothic arches” that are the focal point of the boxes.

Using the traditional technique of steam bending, participants in this one day course will craft a set of two Steam Bent boxes. This is a highly enjoyable process that produces beautiful results, and is suitable for woodworkers and craftspeople of all levels.

You will learn how to layout, cut, shape, feather and pin the fingers that hold the bands together, cut and fit the top and bottom of the boxes. Attractively detailed with copper tacks, the colour and figure of the timber in your boxes will be enhanced using a traditional shellac and wax finish. We will also discuss other finishing options if you want to add colour to one or both of your boxes after the completion of the course.
