"I want to keep coming! I'm very sad this next week is our last. I have felt such joy coming to class every week. Thank you Stuart, Carol & Donna. Nada (instagram)"For the initial course, I did think at first that it was quite a cost, however after undertaking the course I actually thought that it was a bargain considering the sheer amount of work we did, the small class size and the attention, care, patience and knowledge of all of the instructors." Margaret

Carving Workshop - with Hape Kiddle
We are very excited to announce that Master Carver and Jewellery and Object maker Hape Kiddle will be leading a two day carving workshop in April. Hape has been carving from an early age and his aesthetic can be seen in the forms he creates that link him to the natural environment. A workshop with Hape is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the contemplation of materials and process as much as learning the techniques Hape has developed over his many years of professional practise.
Spoon Carving Workshop - with Fiona Glover
Fiona Glover of "Twig to Table" will be presenting a couple of one day workshops this coming winter school holidays at Heartwood Creative. Instagrammers will be familiar with Fiona's beautiful work and images @fi.glover or you may have seen her creations at Craft ACT, the National Library or Meet Gather Collect in Canberra.

Mybench Making Course - 3 Days
Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and who enquired about our new Mybench making course at the recent Illawarra Festival of Wood. Read the features that make mybench a great choice for woodworkers.
Read the review of Mybench by esteemed Australian furniture maker Darren Oats in the current edition of Australian Wood Review Magazine.
"At the heart of every woodworker’s practice is a good bench. When I signed up to the 3 day bench course with Heartwood Creative Woodworking, my goal was to bring home a bench. Not only did I achieve that, but I learnt so much more. The design of a bench is critical. Heartwood’s bench has been designed by a woodworker for a woodworker. I learnt more about design in this course than anything I have made to date - not only the need for a flat surface, but also the need to account for different holding methods. I also learnt about the importance of the joinery that keeps the bench straight and true. The use of Heartwood’s state of the art machinery and Stuart’s close instruction gave me so much more confidence when using tools and a better understanding of different joinery that I have not used before. Best of all, I have a bench that fits into my limited space at home but which will allow me to continue to learn the skills of woodworking. Thankyou so much Heartwood Creative Woodworking.

Double Bevel Marquetry Workshop With Peter Young
Under the expert tuition of acclaimed Australian furniture maker Peter Young you can learn to add drama and interest to your woodworking projects by creating pictures or decorative patterns with timber veneers.
Earlier this year Stuart attended Peter’s marquetry course at Damion Fauser’s workshop in Brisbane and was impressed with Peters ability to communicate this fascinating and proven technique that is suitable for all levels of woodworkers.
A unique opportunity for Sydneysider’s to learn from a knowledgeable and experienced craftsman, Peter is a studio woodworker who makes commission pieces and singular items for exhibition. He has incorporated marquetry into many boxes and fine furniture pieces.

Chatoyance - Master Woodworkers Exhibition
by Studio Woodworkers Australia (SWA)
18th Feb – 8th April
If you love wood, don’t miss this exciting exhibition by some of Australia’s acclaimed and favourite craftspeople. SWA members (some working in collaboration with emerging makers) will showcase their skills and explore the meaning of “Chatoyance”. Derived from the French “chatoyer” meaning “to shine like a cat's eye”, in woodworking terms this describes a “shimmer” “figure” or three-dimensional characteristic in timber highly sought after by furniture makers. Stuart is a member of SWA and will be participating in the exhibition.
Until: 8th April
Where: Sturt Craft Centre, Range Road, Mittagong
Project of the month
Kip Stewart Bookcase
We love this retro bookcase by ongoing furniture making student Vern using solid Tasmanian Blackwood and veneered board. The most challenging aspect of this project was the curved legs and a number of test legs were made in the planning stages as well as customised jigs that enabled Vern to quickly and successfully repeat production processes. The finish was created using layers of blonde shellac and is underpinned by Vern’s sanding efforts that make this piece truly sing. This bookcase is based on a 1950’s bookcase designed by Kip Stewart for Drexel Declaration.
